Heat Pumps
Cold-climate heat pump installation and service, sized for Northland winters and paired with the gas heat your house already has.
How they work here
A heat pump moves heat instead of burning fuel, and a cold-climate model keeps moving it well below zero. It carries the shoulder seasons and most ordinary winter days, which in this climate is where the majority of the heating hours actually are. When it turns deep cold, your furnace or boiler takes the load. We set the changeover point off the outdoor temperature and off what gas and electricity cost you, rather than leaving it wherever the thermostat shipped from the factory.
- Cold-climate rated equipment
- Dual fuel with the gas heat you have
- Changeover set against your utility rates
- Cooling from the same system in summer
Service and replacement
We service heat pumps we did not install, any brand. The three we see most: a unit that ices up and never clears, a defrost cycle running every twenty minutes for no reason, and a system that spent all winter on the gas side because nobody ever configured the changeover. That last one is a setup problem, not a failure, and it is the cheapest fix on this page.
- Defrost and reversing valve faults
- Refrigerant and airflow diagnostics
- Thermostat and changeover configuration
- Existing systems, any brand
No strip heat, on purpose
In most of the country a heat pump backs up to electric resistance coils. Every house in this service area has gas heat of some kind, so here the gas equipment is the backup and we do not install strip heat. That is the difference between a system that saves you money and an electric bill in January that undoes the whole reason you bought it.
What it costs before rebates
Minnesota Power rebates cold-climate heat pumps, and the amount depends on whether the system is ducted. Current amounts, along with a straight account of where the federal tax credits stand, are on the financing page. We run the numbers against your own utility rates before you commit to anything.
Rebates and financingQuestions
Do heat pumps actually work at twenty below?
Cold-climate models keep producing heat well below zero and do not simply shut off at a cutoff temperature. What changes is how much heat they make: output falls as it gets colder, and past a certain point running the gas equipment is cheaper. That is why we pair the two instead of selling a heat pump as a straight furnace replacement.
Do I have to replace my furnace to add a heat pump?
No. If your furnace is in good shape, a heat pump goes in alongside it and shares the ductwork and the blower. If the furnace is on its last season anyway, doing both at once usually costs less than doing them two years apart.
Will a heat pump lower my heating bill?
Usually, and how much depends on the spread between your gas rate and your electric rate. We would rather show you that math for your house than promise you a percentage.
