Ductless mini-split installation and service

Where they fit

A ductless system is an outdoor unit and one or more indoor heads joined by a line set that needs a hole through the wall. They require no ducts, no dropped soffits, no tearing into a finished ceiling. It heats and it cools, and every head keeps its own setpoint.

  • Additions and finished attics
  • Garages, shops, and three-season porches
  • Houses with hot water heat and no ducts
  • The one room that is always ten degrees off

Installation and service

Most of what separates a mini-split that lasts from one that annoys you is work you cannot see after the cover goes on: where the refrigerant line set runs, how the condensate drains, whether the wall bracket caught framing or just drywall, and whether anyone pulled a proper vacuum before opening the service valves.

  • Single-zone and multi-zone systems
  • Line set routed and covered outside
  • Condensate handled properly

Boiler houses

If you heat with hot water, ductless is the practical way to get cooling into an older house without opening up your walls. It is also the most cost-effective way to put real heat into a space the boiler doesn't reach, and the same equipment can do both jobs.

Questions

Can one mini-split heat my whole house?

Not on its own. A head heats only the room it is in. Whole-home ductless means a head in each area you want conditioned, which is a real option in a house with no ducts, but it is a multi-zone system rather than one unit in the living room.

Do ductless mini-splits cool as well as heat?

Yes. It is the same equipment running in reverse, so one system covers both seasons. In a garage or an addition that is often the entire reason to install one.

How loud is a mini-split?

The indoor head is quieter than a furnace starting up. With new inverter technology even outdoor units have gotten considerably quiet to the point you may not even notice them running.
