Safety first
- Smell gas?
- Rotten eggs or hissing near the furnace, boiler, or meter: get everyone out first, then call 911 and the gas utility from outside. Don't touch the light switches or the garage door on the way, and leave the valve at the meter to the utility.
- Smoke, water, or a burning smell?
- Shut the unit off at the switch beside it or at its breaker, and leave it off until we get there.

Check the thermostat
Fresh batteries, set to HEAT (or COOL in summer), and push the setpoint a few degrees past the room. If it kicks on, call and cancel: we would rather lose the visit than charge you for a $4 fix.

Look at the furnace switch
It looks like a light switch, sits on or near the furnace, and gets bumped off. Check that the blower door is latched, and hold the filter up to a light while you're down there.

Clear a path to the equipment
Three feet of open floor around the furnace is plenty. Outside, brush the snow off the heat pump or AC and off the two white PVC pipes at the wall: buried in a drift, they will lock a high-efficiency furnace out.
Still no heat? Call (218) 206-6075 instead of sending a request: no-heat calls go to the front of the queue. If the house is dropping fast, open the cabinets under your sinks and let one faucet trickle.
