Furnaces & Boilers
Gas furnace and boiler repair, replacement, and seasonal service in Duluth and the greater Northland.
Repair
We diagnose off readings instead of guesses: gas pressure, temperature rise, static pressure, and flame signal on a furnace, and what the circulator and the zone valves are actually doing on a boiler. You get a flat price for the fix before anyone touches it.
- Ignition and flame sensor faults
- Blowers, inducers, and control boards
- Gas valves and pressure switches
- Circulators, zone valves, expansion tanks
Replacement
A cracked heat exchanger in a twenty-year-old 80 percent furnace is a replacement conversation and we will say so plainly. A $180 part in an otherwise healthy system is not, and we will say that too. When it is time, the job starts with a room-by-room load calculation.
- Load calculation
- 90 percent AFUE and better
- Venting and combustion air corrected to code
- Permit pulled and inspection scheduled
Worth a call now
- The burners light and drop out shortly after
- A boom or a rumble when it fires
- It runs and runs and the house doesn't warm up
- A boiler you top off with water every few weeks
- Rooms that used to be comfortable and are not anymore
- Soot, rust streaks, or standing water around the base
Any of these is worth a call at (218) 206-6075. Office hours are every day 8a–8p, and no-heat calls go to the front of the queue.
Hot water heat is still everywhere here
A lot of homes in Duluth never got ducts, and there are cast-iron boilers that have outlasted three owners. We work on them. If yours is worth keeping we will tell you what it needs, and if the near-boiler piping is the real problem rather than the boiler, we will tell you that instead of quoting you a new one.
If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds
Get everyone out of the house, then call 911 or the gas utility from outside, not from the kitchen. Once the house is clear we can find the cause. It is usually a cracked heat exchanger, a blocked flue, or a water heater backdrafting because the house got tightened up and nobody accounted for the combustion air.
Questions
Should I repair my furnace or replace it?
It comes down to the part, the age, and the safety of the heat exchanger. A control board or a motor in a ten-year-old furnace is usually worth fixing. A cracked heat exchanger, or a repair that costs a third of a new system in a furnace already past fifteen years, generally is not. Herstad Heating & Cooling will run you through all of the options available to you, so the choice is yours to make.
Do you work on boilers, or only forced air?
Both. We service and replace gas boilers and hot water heat, including circulators, zone valves, and expansion tanks, along with forced-air furnaces.
Do you pull permits for your work?
Yes. The permit and the inspection are included in the quoted price on installs. We handle inspections for you as well.
